To record seismic energy, geophones are placed on the surface. Seismic energy is then generated by deploying a vibroseis truck, which creates energy by using a large weight at the surface, or by using small amounts of dynamite.

Seismic energy travels as waves through the subsurface. A portion of the seismic energy reflects off the layers in the earth and travels back to the surface.
Geophones on the surface record the seismic energy contained in the wave. Multiple geophones spread over large distances record the seismic energy. This recorded energy provides information on the properties of the target formation.
